GOEMA SYMPHONY NO. 1

Mac McKenzie’s 2010 symphony saw the ground-breaking combination of indigenous Cape sounds (including Khoi-San mouth bow, minstrel banjo, klopse percussion and jazz brass) with classical instrumentation. Preparations, rehearsals and the première of “Goema Symphony No. 1″ appear in the film Mama Goema: The Cape Town Beat in Five Movements (2011).

FROM PUNK THROUGH PENTHOUSE TO THE UNIVERSITY

The musical journey of Mac McKenzie is a diverse string of manifestations that spans a professional recording career of over twenty-five years. Despite surface differences, an indispensable denominator binds the brash punk riffs of The Genuines in 1986 to the sultry violin lines of The Cape Town Composers’ Workshop showcase in 2009. In a word, it’s goema!
